Starting your Goto adventure

Goto Tsubaki Airport (Fukue Airport) is easily accessible via a short flight from Fukuoka.

Goto Tsubaki Airport (Fukue Airport) is the gateway to the serene Goto Islands, located just 40 minutes by plane from Fukuoka. Situated on Fukue Island (Fukuejima) and surrounded by the vibrant cobalt blue waters of the Goto Archipelago, this charming hub offers easy access to a tranquil natural environment and a seamless connection to the mainland.

Serendip Hotel Goto provides a cafe and coworking space for locals and guests alike.

Serendip Hotel Goto, perfectly located near the airport and harbor, brings to life the concept of “an inn where wonderful coincidences happen.” With a conference room, car rental service, and a kids’ space, plus a first-floor cafe loved by guests and locals alike, it’s more than just a place to stay – it’s a center of connection and relaxation.  Whether you’re socializing in the welcoming cafe, diving into work, or exploring the vibrant surroundings, this one-of-a-kind hotel lets you craft an experience to perfectly match your unique style.

Conrad: The coworking space was impeccably maintained, making it easy to enter my flow state to get stuff done. It was also a popular spot for local residents to gather. I had many warm and friendly interactions with them, which made me feel truly welcomed and connected to the community.

Delving into the islands’ unique local industries

Botanical gin crafted in a bespoke distiller.

After catching up on work and firing off a few emails, take a 30-minute drive to the Hantomari area to visit the Goto Tsubaki Distillery and learn about local industry and people of Goto. This unique facility is home to Gotogin, a highly acclaimed Japanese craft gin made using the fruit of the camellia trees that bloom across the island. The floral motif is reflected in the distillery’s decor and beautiful ‘tsubomi’ bottles that make this artisan gin truly one-of-a-kind. Situated next to an old churchyard in the captivating village of Hantomari, the distillery offers a fascinating look into Goto’s heritage and craft culture.

Find inspiration in the warm, welcoming local Japanese craftspeople of the village who work in harmony with nature. Both the distillery workers and local village people are eager to chat and engage with visitors, fostering a warm atmosphere that allows for the development of deeper connections with the islands and wider Japan.

Conrad: Nestled in a picturesque cove, the distillery offered an unforgettable experience. I was deeply impressed by the Goto people’s meticulous dedication to craftsmanship, which was beautifully embodied in the way they produced their gin.

Sato-no-Shio exudes rustic island charm with its small cafe and shop.

Just a short walk away from the distillery, Sato-no-Shio sells homemade Goto salt in a cozy café setting that utilizes Goto’s natural bounty. Enjoy a cup of refreshing ginger tea and a slice of homemade cake while chatting with the warm and knowledgeable owners. Once nomads in their own way, the couple once traveled the world by boat, eventually deciding to settle in this rural part of Japan.

The shop also hosts salt-making workshops and a variety of local excursions, offering the perfect opportunity to get further immersed in the island’s community and culture.

Conrad: The fascinating conversation I had with the owners really left a lasting impression on me. Their salt, crafted with care and sincerity, is a true testament to their dedication, and witnessing the process up close was truly remarkable. As I learned more about their work, it became clear that the salt-making process is deeply intertwined with the natural essence of the region.

Drive, dine, and unwind

Colorit boasts the ultimate coworking space, offering panoramic views of Goto’s vast cobalt blue oceans.

Conrad: As soon as I stepped into the main entrance hall of the inn, I was blown away by the incredible atmosphere and enchanting space. The breathtaking ocean view through the domed windows felt like something straight out of a movie. It was indescribably beautiful and, without a doubt, the most unforgettable place I have ever stayed. This inn offers a unique experience that will stay with you forever.

Driving through the scenic, hilly landscape is an adventure in itself, with dynamic winding roads and breathtaking panoramas of the sea meeting rugged cliffs. Pull up at one of the many viewpoints along the road to watch the picturesque sunset before checking in to Colorit for the night. This beachfront facility offers a captivating setting, featuring a spacious open-plan coworking area, an ocean-view terrace, and an elegant restaurant where chefs craft meals before your very eyes. A luxurious public bath further adds to the allure. The hotel also provides a range of curated activity packages, from stand-up paddleboarding and cycling to bespoke soap-making, ensuring a well-rounded, enriching experience and opportunities to foster more connections with other nomads and locals.

Conrad: The accommodations, work environment, scenery, and atmosphere were wonderfully curated, and I truly felt I could live and work here forever. I can still remember gazing at the star-filled sky visible through the spa windows at night, contemplating about life and the world around us.

Refresh and rejuvenate with a peaceful day in Goto

Start your day with a revitalizing tent sauna followed by an invigorating ocean cold plunge.

Conrad: There’s nothing quite like the sensation of diving into the ocean after a refreshing sauna session – it was a completely unique experience. Lounging in the sun on a beach chair afterward enabled me to reflect on and appreciate the beautiful little things in life.

Craving some quiet time to relax and reflect alone? After a delicious traditional Japanese breakfast at the hotel, try Colorit’s own ‘Tent Sauna’ for a calming morning detox. Top off the experience with a cold plunge in the scenic blue ocean, or relax on one of the beach chairs while taking in the view.

Daihoji Temple is a quiet haven that invites visitors to slow down and relax.

Make use of the coworking space with its calming ocean view, or drive to Daihoji Temple for a quick break. The modest gates of this hillside retreat give way to reveal expansive, serene grounds, infused with Goto’s distinctive island charm and a peaceful tranquility. Breathe in the ocean air and enjoy the Shingon Buddhist architecture that includes a five-tiered pagoda and bronze temple bell. Goto offers the perfect setting for quick island excursions, providing the ideal chance to unwind from work, contemplate, and get immersed in the incredible natural landscapes.

Conrad: The first day allowed me to broaden my horizons, while the second day provided a chance to reset my body and mind. I felt fully rejuvenated through my calm experience at the temple, which definitely had a positive impact on the remainder of my trip.

Savor local flavors

The irresistible aroma of fresh galette and the bold taste of black tea fills the air, wrapping visitors in a cozy moment of pure tranquility.

No visit to Goto is complete without stopping by Aenima, an enchanting local restaurant situated just a 10-minute drive from Colorit. This cozy spot has gained a loyal following for its simple yet delicious galettes and huge selection of artisanal hand-poured teas. The friendly master personally crafts each dish in front of diners, utilizing candlelight in the evenings to add to the intimate ambiance.
