Start your Hyuga journey

Oise Sun Cafe & Hotel is an ideal base for digital nomads in Hyuga.

Stefanos: Being so close to the ocean means it’s easy to slip out for a quick break in between work.

Hyuga is easily accessible via the Limited Express Nichirin, which travels directly from JR Miyazaki Airport Station to JR Hyugashi Station in just one hour. While it may be more off the beaten path compared to other digital nomad hotspots in Kyushu, this tropical town is home to both a thriving foreign surfing community and a fast-growing digital nomad scene.

Settle into Oise Sun Cafe & Hotel, a modern, inviting space defined by natural materials. Spacious rooms, a well-equipped coworking space, and a delightful café serving tempting treats offer everything digital nomads need to stay productive. The facility is situated right next to the glittering blue sea, with Hyuga’s famous beaches only a short drive away – perfect for surfers and nature lovers.

Explore the town’s friendly bars and restaurants

Get to know the friendly locals in Hyuga by dining out.

After catching up on emails, slip into your beach sandals and head over to the lively bars and restaurants around Hyugashi Station, which come alive after sunset. Locals gather at these friendly establishments, feasting on freshly caught seafood washed down with a refreshing glass of beer. Despite the language barrier, many are eager to connect with digital nomads, often starting conversations or inviting foreign travelers to join in a toast. The menu at these cozy venues features everything from glistening sashimi to smoky, charcoal-grilled chicken, solidifying Miyazaki’s reputation as a culinary haven. Recharge with delicious food, warm hospitality, and good conversation, then see where the night takes you.

Stefanos: The locals were warm and welcoming, making my experience unforgettable. Exploring the town together with Japanese people offers an even more immersive way to discover the local culture.

Settle into beach life

The stunning rippled boulders at Omi Shrine, formed by the river’s flow, are a sight to behold.

Keep the good vibes flowing the next morning with a refreshing stroll to nearby Isegahama Beach and Omi Shrine. This coastal gem boasts stunning views of crystal-clear waters framed by lush green mountains. At the shrine, you’ll find the rare sight of rugged shrine architecture set against the backdrop of the sparkling sea. With such places of inspiration just moments away, living and working in the area is effortless – nomads can easily step out for a quick stroll whenever in need of a creativity boost.

Stefanos: During my work breaks, I loved visiting Isegahama Beach and taking a stroll around Omi Shrine. The white sands and crystal-clear ocean at Isegahama are like something out of a painting, and the sunrise there was truly unforgettable.

Surf and work

Check out the swell conditions from the comfortable coworking space at Stairs of the Sea Surf Office.

Surfers and marine sport enthusiasts will find the perfect remote working destination in Stairs of the Sea Surf Office, situated on a beach renowned for its excellent waves. This expansive, multi-faceted hub for digital nomads features shops, cafes, restaurants, and a coworking space offering breathtaking panoramic ocean views. Work while keeping an eye on the waves and grab your board as soon as the swell hits!

Stefanos: The Stairs of the Sea Surf Office is ideally located, offering great Wi-Fi and excellent facilities. With plenty of delicious cafes and dining options on-site, it’s a relief not having to worry about food shopping. Since pricing is community-based, it’s perfect for groups looking to make the most of the space together.

Get lost in nature

The Umagase Viewpoint is an ideal side quest during breaks from work.

During your downtime, enjoy more of what the rich natural landscape has to offer with easy excursions to local sightseeing spots. The Umagase Viewpoint on Cape Hyuga offers sweeping, panoramic views of the vast Pacific Ocean, its deep blue waters stretching endlessly to the horizon, framed by jagged rock formations. This natural haven is mesmerizing at any time of day: in the morning, the sunlight dances across the sparkling sea, casting a shimmering glow; by sunset, the sky is ablaze with vibrant orange and pink hues, painting a stunning canvas that highlights the raw, untamed beauty of nature.

Stefanos: Umagase is a one-of-a-kind nature spot where towering cliffs form a stunning landscape. The peaceful atmosphere makes it the perfect place to unwind and soak up the beauty. The breathtaking panoramic ocean views along the boardwalk were enough to make me want to come back time and time again during my stay.

Indulge in Hyuga’s famous seafood

It doesn’t get any fresher than this! Tuck into seafood delivered straight from the adjacent port at Seaside Station Hososhima.

Dining spots that can be easily accessed in between work include Seaside Station Hososhima, a budget-friendly place to taste fresh local seafood and agricultural products, and enjoy the natural bounty of Hyuga. There, nomads can enjoy a fresh seafood sashimi rice bowl while taking in the beautiful view of the ocean.

Stefanos: The seafood here was not only incredibly delicious but also very affordable. Being able to enjoy tasty local dishes while keeping costs low is a major perk for any long-term nomad.

Bond with the locals and enjoy the community atmosphere

Hyuga locals are warm and welcoming despite the language barrier.

Stefanos: It was fun getting to sample a wide range of coffees!

For those seeking luxury home comforts and more opportunities to settle into local life, visit Comfort Café & Bar BUCYAYRO, where you can indulge in delicious pizza, pasta, and steak in a stylish setting with an upscale ambiance. The knowledgeable barista offers a wide selection of expertly curated coffees, often engaging in friendly conversations with patrons. The café is regularly bustling with welcoming locals, fostering an inviting atmosphere that easily allows digital nomads to build more connections within the community.

Savor the thrill of rugged local adventure

Dive deeper into Hyuga’s coastal charm with an exhilarating fishing experience.

Stefanos: The fisherman was incredibly warm and friendly. Although his English was limited, he was kind enough to use illustrations to teach me about the city’s fishing history. His efforts gave me a deeper understanding and sparked a genuine interest in the fishing industry, making for a very interesting experience.

For a more immersive ocean experience and an unforgettable adventure to cap off your time in Hyuga, try a Fishing Experience with Local Fishermen. Team up with a friendly local guide on an exciting journey to catch seasonal produce just off the coast. Pull in the heavy net and savor the sea’s harvest as the expert fisherman guts and prepares fresh sashimi right on deck. The appeal of Hyuga for digital nomads lies in these opportunities to adventure in nature and form real bonds with the local community.

An unforgettable location filled with unforgettable people

Hyuga perfectly combines community with rugged, untouched nature.

Hyuga is an ideal destination for digital nomads seeking a supportive community for long-term stays.
