Yamatane Museum of Art
The Yamatane Museum of Art, which opened in 1966, holds the distinction of being Japan’s first museum dedicated to “nihonga”, or Japanese paintings. Its collection of over 1,800 works includes six Important Cultural Properties, along with modern and contemporary Japanese paintings by prominent artists in the history of “nihonga”, early modern works, ukiyo-e, oil paintings, and more.
The Yamatane Museum of Art hosts five to six themed exhibitions annually, showcasing highlights from its collection. In the museum’s tranquil atmosphere, visitors can immerse themselves in the artistry of traditional “nihonga” techniques and expression, allowing them to appreciate the natural beauty and seasonal changes of Japan through Japanese paintings. The museum shop, located on the same floor as the exhibition rooms, features items that celebrate the distinctive charm of the displayed works.
After exploring the museum, be sure to visit Cafe Tsubaki, conveniently located within the same venue. This spot serves exclusive Japanese sweets, specially crafted to reflect motifs like flowers, fruits, and animals found in the artworks. Take a moment to relax and savor these treats while enjoying the view of the ginkgo-lined street.
*As there are no permanent exhibitions, please check the website in advance for information on special and themed exhibitions.

Cerulean Tower Noh Theatre
The Cerulean Tower Noh Theatre, which opened in May 2001 on the site of Tokyu Corporation’s former headquarters, was established as a follow-up to Bunkamura under the late Noboru Goto’s grand vision to “redevelop Shibuya and establish it as a center of culture.” As a facility designed to showcase traditional culture to a global audience, the theatre hosts a variety of performances, from Noh and Kyogen to collaborations with foreign cultures like ballet and classical music.
Notably, Nogaku Theatre was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2008, offering audience members the opportunity to appreciate the Japanese sense of beauty through its distinctive stage direction and elaborate costumes.
