2025.02 Experience Mornings and Evenings in Japan: Unforgettable Scenes of Mie [PR]

Mie Prefecture, situated in the west-central part of Japan’s main island of Honshu, is home to Ise Jingu(Ise Shrine), a sacred site deeply rooted in Japanese faith. From the breathtaking ocean views of the south to the enchanting illuminations and hidden waterfalls in the valleys of the north, Mie offers an array of stunning destinations. Blessed with abundant natural beauty including the sea and mountains, it is also renowned for its high-quality ingredients, making it a haven for food lovers. In this article, we’ll explore Mie’s captivating “morning and evening” spots. Discover spectacular scenes of Japan you’ve yet to encounter, and add them to your bucket list of unforgettable views!

Ise Jingu(Ise Shrine): The tranquility of early morning and the vibrancy of the Tsuitachi Morning Market

Ise Jingu is one of the most spiritual places in Japan, and within its grounds lies the particularly exceptional Kotaijingu (commonly referred to as Naiku), which has held a revered status in Japanese faith for nearly 2,000 years. Visiting the Naiku in the early morning further enhances its sacred atmosphere. Pass through the torii gate and cross the Ujibashi Bridge to enter the sacred precincts of the shrine. Take a peaceful stroll along the approach to the main sanctuary.

Surrounded by lush forest, the fresh air carries the songs of birds amidst the silence, while sunlight filters gently through the trees, creating a profound sense of purity. Here, nature and spirituality coexist, offering a glimpse into a unique aspect of Japanese culture.

For a truly special experience, visit the shrine early on the first day of the month—a long-standing tradition in Ise known as ‘Tsuitachi Mairi’ (with “tsuitachi” meaning the first day of the month in Japanese). Locals gather to express gratitude for safely completing the past month and to pray for safety in the month ahead. Shops near the torii gate open early to welcome visitors.

Be sure to explore the Tsuitachi Morning Market* near the torii gate in Okage Yokocho, located in the town of Oharaimachi. This area recreates a historical Japanese townscape, making it feel like a journey back to the Edo period (17th–19th centuries), when samurai still roamed the land. Begin the early hours with the special breakfast offerings for the day at each stall, such as morning rice porridge and Ise udon noodles. While soaking in the unique atmosphere, try browsing through the lines of market stalls for souvenirs. Don’t miss the famous Tsuitachi-mochi (rice cakes) from Akafuku, a renowned shop located near the entrance to Okage Yokocho.
*The Tsuitachi Morning Market operates from around 4 am to 8 am.

Take in the evening view of Ago Bay while soaking in a hot spring

After an early morning visit to Ise-Jingu (Naiku), try heading south to Kashikojima Hojoen. There, spectacular views of Ago Bay, including the ever-changing hues of breathtaking sunsets, await.

Kashikojima is known for its stunning rias coastline and the peaceful sight of pearl rafts floating on the water. On clear days, the waves sparkle in the sunlight, creating a picture-perfect scene. From the special rooms on the top floor, the view resembles a masterpiece painting. As dusk falls, unwind in the open-air bath in the garden.

While soaking in the hot spring, watch as the sky transitions to vibrant shades of red. The sunset, accompanied by a gentle sea breeze, is an unforgettable sight. For dinner, indulge in a kaiseki-style meal featuring local ingredients from Mie Prefecture, such as those from Ise and Shima. This feast will nourish both your body and soul. Whether you seek relaxation or a bit of activity, Kashikojima Hojoen has something for everyone—from unwinding in comfort to enjoying a game at their bowling alley. You can also take in the stunning views from the baths in the special rooms (note: not a hot spring).

The hidden paradise of Akame Valley: Yugen-no-takeakari light-up

Next, let’s explore The Akame 48 Falls, nestled in Akame Valley in the northwestern part of Mie Prefecture. From evening to night, this deep and tranquil valley—shaped by a crystal-clear river and enveloped by a dense forest—transforms into a magical scene illuminated by 2,000 warm bamboo lights of varying sizes. These lights cast a gentle glow over the moss-covered valley, creating a soothing and enchanting atmosphere. The annual Yugen-no-takeakari light-up*, themed differently each year, is an experience that will leave a lasting impression.
*The Yugen-no-takeakari light-up requires an admission fee and runs from around late October to early January. Please check the official website (linked at the end of the article) for detailed schedules and times.

After marveling at the bamboo light display, head to the hot spring facility called ‘A Secluded Inn Iga Akame Onsen Kakure-no-Yu Taisenkaku’, near the entrance to Akame Valley. Historically, this valley served as a training ground for ninja. In the open-air bath surrounded by pristine wilderness, you’ll feel the soothing breeze and hear the gentle rustling of trees, providing a truly serene escape. For dinner, indulge in a luxurious kaiseki meal featuring seasonal ingredients, with Iga beef—known as the most “elusive Japanese beef”—as the star. The Iga Koshihikari rice, grown with the area’s pure water, also offers a taste that’s truly exceptional.

Fudo Falls is about a 5-minute walk from the entrance to The Akame 48 Falls. During the Yugen-no-takeakari light-up event, it is also accessible during the evening and into the night.

The sounds of the waterfall and river, along with the vast spread of green moss, quietly mark the passage of time. The beauty of the valley is gently illuminated by the bamboo lights.

Nabana no Sato Flower Park: Spectacular illuminations

Our next destination is the breathtaking nightscape of Nabana no Sato Flower Park, located in the northeastern part of Mie Prefecture. This dazzling illumination display features approximately 8 million LED lights sparkling across a vast expanse. After crossing the Great River of Light water display and walking through the 200-meter-long Flower Corridor light tunnel, you’ll encounter the stunning ‘Majestic Mt. Fuji’ spectacle. For about 8 minutes, watch as the beautiful figure of Mt. Fuji transforms with a rainbow of lights, evoking the brilliance of fireworks.
*Illuminations run from around late October to late May.

To make the most of your visit, arrive at Nabana no Sato Flower Park a little before the lights are switched on, giving you time to enjoy the vibrant seasonal flowers. Be sure to check out the Begonia Garden as well, where large begonias bloom all year round.
