In Japan, copper was once called akagane, literally meaning ”red metal.” Copper goods have been manufactured and used in daily life for over 400 years in Sendai. At Sendai’s Tazen workshop, you can experience shaping copper with your own hands. At the workshop, local coppersmiths explain the characteristics and history of copper and can guide you through making a cup or dish from a copper plate of about 9 centimeters (3. 54 inches) in diameter (3.94 inches). You are certain to deepen your understanding and appreciation for this precious metal, and you can even bring home a souvenir that’s totally one-of-a-kind.

Contribution to sustainability: Once purchased, copper products can be used for a lifetime when maintained, and so can be passed down for generations. The traditional artistry seen at the Tazen workshop boasts a history of more than 400 years, and because of this, many people come for the maintenance of their precious mementos.
