Discover the wild nature and volcanic blessings of Aso-Kuju National Park in Kyushu
Kyushu Tourism Organization
Mt. Aso is one of Japan’s largest volcanoes and the symbol of Kumamoto Prefecture, rising high above the landscape. The forces of nature here not only formed the land, but also forged the region’s resilient spirit, as even today people continue to live alongside the volcanoes.
Visitors can experience the dramatic scenery of Aso-Kuju National Park and the power of nature up close at the Nakadake Crater. The huge caldera stretches 24 kilometers from north to south, surrounded by five peaks, known collectively as Aso Gogaku. The milky green crater lake wreathed in smoke looks otherworldly, and on days with low volcanic activity you can get the rare chance to witness the power of a volcano up close. Be sure to check the official website for updates before setting out.
Experience all sides of volcanic tourism by relaxing in the iron-rich hot springs after a day exploring the park, or feast on local vegetables and dairy products that gain their deep flavors thanks to the rich soil.
