Relive the largest, most decisive samurai battle in Japanese history

Gifu Prefecture

Despite its peaceful countryside scenery, the plains of Sekigahara in Gifu Prefecture were the backdrop for a significant battle fought in 1600. The aftermath of the battle completely changed the history of Japan, redefined the roles of samurai, and ushered an era of peace under the Tokugawa clan for over 250 years.

A must-see spot for samurai fans and history lovers, the newly opened Gifu Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum is an experienced-based facility that makes use of state-of-the-art technology to give you a deeper understanding and an immersive experience of this dramatic and decisive historical event. Along with various exhibits, the museum features a Ground Vision screen, a 360-degree theater, VR attractions, and an activity corner where you get the chance to hold replica weapons and take pictures while wearing armor.

Also worth visiting are the surrounding battlegrounds, which are dotted with large monuments, flags bearing the crests of the clans that fought in the battle, and information boards. The grounds cover a wide area so the best way to explore them would be by bicycles, which can be rented at the museum.

The Battle of Sekigahara Festival

The Battle of Sekigahara Festival, held every year in October, is another attraction not to be missed. The highlight of the festival is the historical reenactment of the Battle of Sekigahara, with participants dressed in period costumes and demonstrations of matchlock rifle firing.

Don't just learn about the battle - travel back in time and experience the atmosphere of the battlefield on the day it was fought!

How to get there

Take a train from Nagoya Station to JR Sekigahara Station. The museum is about a 10 minute walk from JR Sekigahara Station.
