Bring tradition to life by painting your own Iwami Kagura mask, used in sacred dances
Shimane Prefecture
Step into Shimane Prefecture’s vibrant culture with this hands-on Iwami Kagura mask painting experience. Engage with the traditions of one of Japan’s dynamic folk traditions—kagura, a form of sacred dance and theater known for its extravagant costumes, expressive masks, and energetic movements.
You’ll have the opportunity to paint and personalize a genuine Iwami Kagura mask just like those worn by performers. Each mask is crafted from sekishu-washi, a traditional paper unique to the region and recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. This paper is prized for its strength and flexibility, making it the perfect material for creating lightweight yet durable masks. Each mask is painted by hand, allowing for minute detailing and individual character.
Guided by an expert artisan, choose from four traditional mask designs representing mythical creatures and deities from Japanese mythology. Learn the techniques and methods that bring these expressive masks to life. Choose to follow the traditional ways or personalize it to match your style. When you are done, wear it with pride or display it in your home.
This enriching, artistic adventure offers a memorable connection to Shimane’s rich heritage.
