Snow Country Tourism
Connecting communities and people, forging a future together.
Take a journey along the Snow Country Trail in the lush natural environment of the mountains, just over an hour north of Tokyo by train. The 307-km trail is richly varied, traversing old roads, mountain passes, and mountain paths, with plenty of hot spring resorts to relax at on the way.
This tour will cover one section of the trail, with stays at environmentally sustainable eco lodges. This beginner-friendly adventure also includes scenic travel by e-bikes and local trains.
The three-day tour begins in the Minakami area in Gunma, which has been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (Minakami Eco-Park), and crosses the Uonuma area in Niigata, the greatest rice-producing region in Japan. A guide will accompany the tour and explain the history and culture of the area. Enjoy the snow country’s pristine natural scenery with all your senses, as you will be provided with a water bottle to collect pure spring water along the route to keep hydrated.
A portion of the tour fee will be used for the maintenance and preservation of the trail, allowing you to also contribute directly to the local community.
How to get there
From Tokyo Station, take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Jomo‐Kogen Station (about 1 hour). From there, switch to a bus (about 25 minutes) and get off at Minakami Station.
