Located about 1 hour and 20 minutes by car from central Kyoto, the town of Miyama is famous for its thatched-roof (kayabuki) farmhouses. These traditional structures blend in with the landscape and illustrate how the people of Miyama have lived in harmony with nature and its abundant blessings since long ago.
During the heart of the winter season, these farmhouses and their surroundings are enveloped in snow, creating a beautiful monochrome landscape. This scenery is further transformed every year from late January to early February when a snow lantern festival is held. As night falls, the sight of the snow lanterns and snow-covered farmhouses, with their high pitched roofs illuminated by spotlight, is truly special.
Visitors are welcome to participate in this event by squashing snow into a bucket, turning it upside down, and carving out a small receptacle in which to place a candle. Rental buckets, shovels, and candles are even provided without charge. During the festival, one-day bus tours from JR Kyoto Station are in operation to facilitate easy access, and each day food stalls serve warm snacks made with local ingredients.
Have loads of fun in the snow and make a memorable experience in Kyoto Miyama.
