Hot Springs Under the Stars

Hachijojima is a subtropical island located 287 kilometers south of Tokyo. The warm climate and relatively easy access from Japan's capital city make it an ideal destination for short trips. The island's volcanic terrain and lush vegetation support a wide variety of plants and wildlife and Mt. Hachijo-Fuji, with its dramatic crater and nearby lava fields, hints at the volcanic origins of Hachijojima. The island's geothermal energy results in a plethora of hot springs—many in picturesque locations.

Popular surf breaks, dive spots and the chance to watch bottlenose dolphins, whales and other sea life also make the island a popular destination for marine-sport enthusiasts.

Sueyoshi Hot Spring Miharashi-no-yu

Miharashi-no-yu, a hot spring not far from Hachijojima Lighthouse, is situated in an ideal position overlooking the ocean. The indoor and outdoor baths are alternated between men and women on different days. The outdoor bath offers dramatic ocean views, and bathing under the stars is a popular local pastime.

Uramigataki Hot Spring

This tranquil hot spring is tucked away in the forest, next to Uramigataki Waterfall. An outdoor bath offers mixed bathing (wear a swimsuit), making it ideal for couples and families. This free hot spring tends to be quieter in the mornings when you can relax while enjoying the lush greenery and the sounds of the forest.

How to get there

Hachijojima can be accessed by boat in a little over 10 hours, or by a 50-minute flight from Tokyo.
