The Sacred Cape of the Izu Peninsula

Located on the western edge of Shizuoka's Izu Peninsula, Osezaki is a one-kilometer spit of land that extends into the Suruga Bay. This narrow strip is covered with an ancient juniper forest. From the water's edge, you can see Mt. Fuji rising above the shimmering waters of the bay. Ozezaki is also known for being one of the top diving spots on the Izu Peninsula.

Mysterious Kamiike Pond

Kamiike Pond is located at the very tip of Ozezaki, resembling the eye of a needle. It is considered to be one of the "seven wonders of Izu" for its shrines and natural rock formations. Despite being right next to the bay, the mysterious pond contains fresh water and is teeming with carp.

Ose Shrine for the Sea

The Ose Shrine, located next to Kamiike Pond, is a sacred site for the fishermen of Suruga Bay. Since ancient times, fishermen have dedicated hand-carved models of fishing boats and votive drawings (ema) to the shrine. These artworks vividly depict the lives of fishermen and are considered one of the 100 Best Historical and Cultural Properties of Japanese Fishing Villages.

Protecting Divers and Fishermen

Many divers and fishers worship Ose Shrine as the Guardian Deity of the sea. At the shrine, there is an office where you can purchase a variety of protective amulets relating to diving and other sea-bound activities.

How to get there

From Tokyo Station, take the shinkansen to Mishima Station, then transfer to the Tokaido Line to Numazu Station. Local buses depart from station to Osezaki twice a day; the whole trip takes around 2 hours.
