Umanose Cave Mouth (Jogashima)

A Stunning Stone Archway

The island of Jogashima is connected by bridge to the Miura peninsula in Kanagawa, less than two hours from central Tokyo. The island is a popular spot for diving, thanks to its proximity to the city and easy access from the shore. There are beautiful hiking trails along the coast. The most striking feature of the island is Umanose Cave Mouth. Formed by coastal erosion, this stone archway is stunning in the sunset. On clear days, you can see Mt. Fuji from the shore.

A Historical Lighthouse

Not far from Umanose Cave Mouth is the Jogashima Lighthouse. Constructed in 1870, it was one of the earliest western-style lighthouses in Japan. It was rebuilt in 1927 after an earthquake.

The Island Poet

Jogasaki Lighthouse overlooks the Monument of Kitahara Hakushu, a prominent literary figure. His poem "Rain on Jogashima Island" is engraved on the statue. Another monument to the poet stands near the Jogashima Bridge, on the Northern side of the island.

How to get there

From Misakiguchi station on the Keihin Kyuko line, take the Keihin Kyuko bus to the terminal stop. The cave mouth is a short walk from the bus stop.
