Witness the drift ice of Abashiri
The Abashiri Okhotsk Drift Ice Festival celebrates the arrival of the Siberian Okhotsk drift ice to the waters of the small port town. Visitors can enjoy the enormous sculptures that artists carve into the snow and ice.
Feast on some delicious local treats as you examine the intricate carvings; the area is famous for its scallops and king crab. You can even buy some to take home with you from the produce hall.
The hourly drift ice tours on the two ice breaker ships are the obvious draw for visitors, but winter in Abashiri offers much more. Horseback trekking, ice fishing, eagle watching and snowshoe trekking are just some of the ways you can experience this area of outstanding natural beauty.
How to get there
Take a bus from JR Abashiri Station for 10 minutes to the Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri bus stop. It is then a 10-minute walk to the festival site.
Schedule
Held from early to mid-February.
