Wintertime events expressed through fireworks
A world-class pyrotechnician orchestrates the firework displays in Gero Onsen, which capture the spirit of its winter events. The shows run weekly from January to March, and no two performances are the same. The display is launched from the bridge over the Hida River at 8:30 p.m. every Saturday. The best vantage point is on the east side of the river.
The fireworks in January celebrate New Years and Coming of Age Day, which welcomes Japanese youth into adulthood. February has fireworks depicting the bean-throwing Setsubun Festival and a romantic display for Valentine's Day lovers. In March, the fireworks capture the essence of Hinamatsuri — or Girl’s Day — and the arrival of spring.
A winter trip to Gero Onsen offers more than just an enthralling fireworks display. Visitors can relax in the healing hot springs in the shadow of Mt. Ontake and peacefully explore the traditional thatched-roof houses covered in snow.
