Offshore fireworks light up the skies of Hakodate
The natural arc of Hakodate’s bay makes it an ideal setting for this three-day fireworks festival, held in early February. In addition to the popular bayside views, the peak of Mt. Hakodate offers a bird’s-eye sight of the display.
The bay viewpoint is conveniently accessed on foot from Hakodate Station. Get there early to beat the crowds; the event starts at 8 p.m. and lasts for about 20 minutes. Sample some of Hakodate’s delicious seafood — most famously its crab — at the food stalls set up for the duration of the festival. Lucky visitors might get to witness the fireworks display as the snow is falling.
Remember to wear suitably warm clothing as February is when Hakodate is at its coldest.
How to get there
You can travel to Hakodate from Honshu by air, rail and sea. The fireworks are best viewed from the Otemachi area, a five-minute walk from Hakodate Station.
Schedule
Held in early February.
