Snowy views of never-frozen Lake Tazawa

Lake Tazawa, located in Akita Prefecture, is the deepest lake in Japan. Ringed by mountains and a shoreline remarkably free of major development, the lake changes in color throughout the year, reflecting the seasonal shifts of the surrounding landscape. Due to its formidable depth, the lake never freezes. In the depths of winter, the scarlet tinted water contrasts with the white snow covering the mountains and lakeside.

Tazawa is the subject of much local folklore. The most famous tale is that of a young girl called Tatsuko who drank from its waters on a quest for eternal beauty. She was turned into a dragon and lives on as a protector of the lake. A bronze statue of Tatsuko was unveiled in 1968 on one of the quieter stretches of Tazawa’s shores.
