Nyuto Onsenkyo

A rustic hot spring village in Towada-Hachimantai National Park

The seven hot springs scattered throughout the foothills of Akita’s Mt. Nyuto in Towada-Hachimantai National Park are known collectively as Nyuto Onsenkyo. Visiting these unique hot spring lodgings, located among virgin beechwood forests, is an excellent way to enjoy the tranquil winter atmosphere and snowfall on Mt. Nyuto.

History runs deep in Nyuto Onsenkyo. One hot spring lodge of note is Tsuru no Yu, which has been in service for over 300 years and was a favorite of traveling daimyo, or provincial lords, during the Edo period (1603-1867). Tsuru no Yu retains the classic thatched-roof buildings popular in days of old, evoking a timeless feeling for those enjoying the snowy views and local delicacies on offer.
