Spin around on ice skates
Ice skating is a popular recreation in Japan, and you’ll find rinks all around the country. While most of them are indoors, there are a few outdoor ice rinks open exclusively in the winter season.
You can skate on natural ice at Ice Land Akan in Kushiro, Hokkaido. The rink is located in a national park, so you’ll be practicing your pirouettes against a striking natural setting. This spot also offers a wide range of winter activities like banana boats and buggies. The rink is open from January to March and is accessible by car from Memanbetsu Airport.
Kera-Ike Ice Rink in Karuizawa is located closer to Tokyo. The gourd-shaped ice rink is actually a frozen pond that sits under the shadow of snowy Mt. Asama, surrounded by tranquil forests. Soak in the nearby hot springs or check out local eateries and shops after slipping off your skates. The rink is open from October to March and accessible by car or bus from Karuizawa Station.
