Tarumae Garo 樽前ガロー

Steep cliffs carved by the Tarumae River are lined with green mossy walls rising up from slow, flowing waters.

Access Tarumae Garo by car from the main road between Tomakomai and Shiraoi.

The journey takes around 20 minutes in both directions. Turn toward the mountain and head up the moderately flat gravel access road.

Tarumae Garo, located in the western part of Tomakomai City, makes a pleasant, easy hike. Visitors are often surprised to find themselves alone, so it's a great place to take in the serene atmosphere if you're looking for some peace and quiet.

Follow the signs from the main road as there are no tourist facilities on-site.

For the walk, wear sturdy shoes or rubber boots that you don't mind getting dirty. Bring a packed lunch with you, or head back to Tomakomai or Shiraoi for food. Do not go down to the river, due to the risk of rockfall.

The rock walls are covered in a lush carpet of green moss, making for spectacular photos. These mossy areas extend to both sides of the mountain and can also be found near Lake Shikotsu .

The area is best enjoyed from late spring to early fall.
