An introduction to the Kinkowan Bay tidal flat ecosystem

The Shigetomi Kaigan Nature Experience Museum (also known as the Nagisa Museum) introduces visitors to the ecology of Kinkowan Bay and the Aida Caldera. Nagisa means "beach" or "shore" in Japanese, and the museum focuses on the tidal flats of the Shigetomi Coast in Kinkowan Bay. From the benches in front of the museum, visitors have a spectacular view of the bay and Mount Sakurajima, an active volcano.

Inside, the museum is split into four themed corners: the tidal flats of Kinkowan Bay, the wildlife of the Aida Caldera, seasons along the Shigetomi Coast, and tourist activities in Kinkowan.

The tidal flat corner uses 3D dioramas to present information on the topography of Kinkowan Bay and how it has changed over time. The wildlife corner features exhibits on the plants and animals that live in the area. Wildlife you might see during your visit to this part of Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park include the common kingfisher, ospreys, dolphins and various kinds of crabs.

Families with small children may enjoy relaxing on the sofa with some of the picture books from the museum's collection.
