A base for learning about the biodiversity of the Ogasawara Islands

The Ogasawara World Heritage Center was established to educate visitors on the region's diverse plants and animals and carry out conservation activities. Ogasawara was designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2011 thanks to its unique ecosystems and wide range of endemic plant and animal species. The variety of endemic species that coexist alongside plant species from both southeast and northwest Asia reflect a range of evolutionary processes. It is an environment found nowhere else in the world.

The center has a variety of exhibits with descriptions of the region's wildlife and habitats. You can learn about the measures that are being taken to protect Ogasawara's fragile ecosystems, which could be impacted simply by traveling between islands with insects on your clothing and shoes. The multi-purpose room often holds photography exhibitions and events on the latest ecological research findings.

The facility also houses an active research center that breeds and protects endangered species such as endemic land snail species and tiger beetles, complete with a veterinary room to treat wild animals.
