Learn about the volcanoes of Unzen-Amakusa National Park
The Heisei Shinzan Nature Center is located in a volcanic landscape warped by a pyroclastic flow—a high-speed, high-temperature wind current of volcanic gas—that occurred during an historic eruption of Mount Fugen in 1991. The center makes use of this unique location to educate visitors about the volcanoes in Unzen-Amakusa National Park.
The nature center's exhibits focus on the eruptions of Mount Fugen and Mount Unzen, the formation of Heisei-Shinzan peak, volcanic geology, the relationship between volcanoes and humans, and how the natural environment recovers after the devastation of a volcanic eruption.
You can watch videos on Heisei-Shinzan's local ecosystems and view exhibitions of crafts made by the staff members. Visitors with children can take advantage of the kid's corner to take a break after hiking local trails. The facility also offers a great view of Mount Heisei-Shinzan from the deck behind the center.
