A giant diorama illuminates Tsuruga's prosperous past as a port town
From the Meiji era through to the Showa era, Tsuruga was a prosperous port town, notably serving as a link between Japan and Europe. One of Japan's most prominent brick structures, the Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse stands as a symbol of that past, and was transformed into a sightseeing destination in 2015.
How to Get There
The Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse is accessible from Tsuruga Station via bus.
You have two options:
Take the Kaigan Line Community Bus from Tsuruga Station to the Kanegasaki Ryokuchi bus stop, and then walk to the Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse
Take the Tsuruga Excursion Line Bus from Tsuruga Station to the Akarengasoko-mae bus stop, which is right outside the warehouse
History crammed into every inch
The main attraction at the warehouse is an impressive diorama which re-creates the booming Tsuruga of the early 1900s in great detail. With a length of 27 meters and a width of 7.5 meters, the diorama was designed based on a map of Tsuruga from 1945, and if you look close you'll even spot cars zooming through the streets.
Get a taste of Tsuruga
Aside from the diorama, there are three restaurants in the building, each representing a different aspect of Tsuruga's culinary culture. Two of the restaurants even have open-air dining, perfect for kicking back and enjoying the surrounding scenery.
