In memorium
A key Zen temple in Kamakura and a branch of nearby Engakuji , the current buildings date to the 1920s. The original was built in 1281 by Hojo Tokiyori, a principal member of the Kamakura Shogunate, to honor the memory of his son, who died prematurely.

A stroll through the grounds
The grounds boast lush flowerbeds and bamboo groves, making them excellent for a quiet stroll. Look out for the statue of Hotei, whose large belly can bring good fortune when rubbed. For hikers, the hour-long Daibutsu hiking trail to the Great Buddha begins at Jochiji.
