All you need to know about Mount Asahidake's landscape and wildlife

The Asahidake Visitor Center is located at an altitude of 1,100 meters on the western slope of Mount Asahidake (2,291 m), Hokkaido's highest peak. With up-to-date information on Mount Asahidake’s trail conditions, brown bear sightings and volcanic activity, the center is a vital stop if you plan to go hiking or climbing (June through September), or to head out for winter sports like skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. The lower station of the Daisetsuzan-Asahidake Ropeway (Sanroku Station) is located next to the visitor center.

Asahidake Visitor Center provides maps (Japanese and English text) and information on hiking, skiing and snowshoeing courses. Hiking routes near the center range from around 30 minutes to 3 hours and are suitable for a range of abilities.

Inside the center, you'll find displays about Daisetsuzan National Park's landscapes, wildlife, ecotourism and culture, as well as an information desk, short videos, a lounge area and restrooms. Peruse the exhibits before heading out onto the mountain to get a sense of the plants and animals to look out for. These include cute critters like the Siberian flying squirrel and northern pika, and birds such as the pine grosbeak, black woodpecker and Siberian rubythroat.

Outdoor equipment is available to rent from the center, including snowshoes, cross-country skis, boots, and hiking poles. There is also original Asahidake Visitor Center equipment and clothing for sale.
